Asanga is currently responsible for Brand Building in Sri Lanka & Maldives for Unilever. In addition, he is the local lead for Corporate Communications & Media in Sri Lanka. Asanga is also one of the four Statutory Directors of Unilever Sri Lanka.
He has over 15 years corporate experience at Unilever. Having joined Unilever as a Management Trainee in 1993 with a BSc (Hons) from University of Colombo, he has held many leadership positions in Research & Development, Manufacturing and Supply Chain before being expatriated to Hindustan Unilever in India in 2002. At Hindustan Unilever, he worked as the South Asia Regional Coordinator for Innovation and Supply Chain for Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan & Nepal. He returned to Sri Lanka in 2004 as the Customer Development Director.
As the Customer Development Director he pioneered many innovations in the field of sales, such as setting up of shopper marketing to market brands using "the store as a communication channel". Under his leadership Unilever Sri Lanka was awarded on the prestigious Best Customer Development Country status in the whole of Asia Africa and Middle East Region.
Asanga was also a member of the Regional Board of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, Sri Lanka Region functioning as the Head of Corporate Integration & Market Interest Groups - an honorary position.
