Renton is the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority and the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, serving a second term in office. He has over 35 years experience in marketing, communications and tourism related areas, having worked in an international environment covering over 30 countries.
Renton was Vice President Asia of the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) based in Singapore in the 1990s and was the CEO/Secretary General of the National Association of Travel Agents Singapore at the invitation of the Singapore Tourist Board. He also served as a Senior Advisor in communications and tourism to the late Lakshman Kadirgamar, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka.
Renton holds a Master of Science degree in Resource Economics from the University of Hawaii, USA and a first class honours degree in economics from the University of Keleniya and is a former General Secretary and Life Member of the Sri Lanka Association of Advancement of Science. In the early 1980s, he served on the Executive Board of the Sri Lanka Institute of Marketing, was Chairman of the Education Committee and served as the editor of the SLIM Marketing Management Journal.
He served as the Marketing Specialist in the international consulting team for the ADB Master Plan preparation project for the Greater Mekong Sub-region (2002-03), Yunnan Province of China’s Master Plan Project funded by the UNDP/WTO (1999), Chief Technical Advisor of the UNDP Partnership for Quality Tourism Project in Nepal (1996/07), Pioneer Advisor of the ADB South Asian-Sub-regional Economic Cooperation’s (SASEC) Tourism sector project (2000), Chairman/facilitator of the Bhutan Tourism Forum (2002) and as Chairman of the PATA Task Force on Macau Tourism and Aviation Development (2002).
Renton is an author of a book on socio-political affairs in Sri Lanka and a published poet on the Penguin label.
